What Makes a Ring Look Art Deco?

The strongest Art Deco inspired rings do not rely on a single decorative feature. Their character usually comes from the relationship between the centre stone and the structure built around it. Straight lines may meet curved outlines, smaller stones may be arranged symmetrically around a larger centre, and contrasting shapes can be used to give the ring a deliberate architectural quality.

Rather than simply adding decorative engraving to a conventional ring, we prefer to think about the complete composition. An elongated emerald cut centre stone, for example, might suit stepped shoulders or narrow baguette-shaped accents. An oval or round stone could instead sit within an angular geometric surround. A square stone may lend itself to a more compact target or panel design.

This is one of the advantages of commissioning a custom Art Deco style ring. The design can begin with the gemstone rather than forcing a particular stone into an existing setting.

Choosing the Centre Stone

The centre stone often determines the entire direction of the ring. Its outline, dimensions and depth influence the width of the setting, the position of surrounding stones and the proportions of the shoulders.

Diamonds are an obvious choice, but an Art Deco style design does not need to be diamond-led. Sapphire, aquamarine, emerald, ruby, zircon and other suitable gemstones can all produce very different results.

Colour can be particularly effective in a geometric design because it creates a clear visual separation between the centre stone and the surrounding diamonds or metalwork.

Sapphire and Diamond Art Deco Style Rings

Sapphire and diamond is one of the most recognisable combinations for this type of ring. The contrast between a rich coloured centre stone and bright surrounding diamonds lends itself particularly well to structured settings.

A sapphire could be used as the centre of a compact geometric cluster, paired with diamonds in a trilogy arrangement, or surrounded by a more elaborate stepped design. The shape of the sapphire matters just as much as its carat weight. Two stones of a similar weight can have noticeably different face-up proportions, which is why we prefer to design around the actual stone wherever possible.

Gemstone origin or treatment should never be assumed from appearance alone. Where origin, treatment status or laboratory documentation is important to the commission, this needs to be considered separately when sourcing the stone.

Aquamarine Art Deco Rings

Aquamarine is particularly suited to larger geometric designs because attractive stones can provide a substantial centre without producing the same visual effect as a diamond of equivalent dimensions. Pale to stronger blue aquamarine can look especially crisp against white metal and diamonds.

Emerald-cut and rectangular aquamarines work naturally with Art Deco styling, although cushion, oval and other shapes can also be used. A bespoke design might place a rectangular aquamarine between diamond shoulders, surround it with a fine diamond frame, or build a more elaborate stepped arrangement around the stone.

Diamond Shapes and Side Stones

Small diamonds do more than add sparkle. In an Art Deco inspired ring they can help create the geometry itself.

Baguettes can extend a design horizontally across the finger. Small round diamonds can soften an angular outline or create a fine border. Tapered stones can help transition from a wider centre setting into the shoulders of the ring.

Older diamond cutting styles can also provide a very different character from modern brilliant cuts. If the intention is to create an antique inspired rather than highly contemporary finish, the cut style of the diamonds is something worth considering alongside their size and layout.

Milgrain, Fine Borders and Geometric Detail

Milgrain is frequently associated with antique and early twentieth-century jewellery and can work extremely well on an Art Deco style ring when it is used selectively. Fine beaded edges can visually separate different parts of the setting and soften otherwise crisp geometric lines.

It should not, however, be added simply because the ring is described as Art Deco. Some designs benefit from a clean polished edge instead. The amount of detail depends on whether the intention is a delicate antique inspired piece or a stronger, cleaner interpretation of the period.

Platinum, White Gold or Yellow Gold?

Platinum and white metals are closely associated with many original Art Deco jewellery designs because a pale metal allows diamonds and geometric stone arrangements to dominate visually. Platinum can therefore be an excellent choice for a ring intended to have a particularly crisp, period-inspired appearance.

White gold offers another option where a pale setting is preferred. Yellow gold changes the character considerably, but it can produce a striking Art Deco inspired ring, particularly when the coloured centre stone or diamond setting is allowed to contrast with the warmer metal.

Two-tone construction can also be considered. For example, a yellow gold shank may be paired with a white setting around diamonds, depending on the design and practical construction of the ring.

Target Rings and Geometric Cluster Designs

A target-style ring places one or more clearly defined borders around the centre stone. This can be particularly effective when colour is used, such as a sapphire centre surrounded by diamonds, or when contrasting gemstones create a distinct geometric frame.

Cluster designs can be more open. Instead of a continuous border, diamonds may be positioned around the centre in a structured arrangement, with gaps, points or stepped sections contributing to the outline.

The important distinction is proportion. Too much surrounding material can overwhelm a smaller centre stone, while a very large centre may make a delicate surround disappear visually. CAD allows these relationships to be reviewed before the ring is committed to production.

Art Deco Trilogy Rings

A trilogy layout can be an excellent starting point for a less elaborate Art Deco design. A coloured centre stone might be flanked by two diamonds, or three geometric stones can be arranged across the finger with a strong emphasis on symmetry.

The setting itself can then introduce the Deco character through stepped shoulders, fine borders, contrasting metal or carefully shaped galleries. This produces a ring that references the period without becoming a large cluster or target design.

Custom Art Deco Engagement Rings

An Art Deco inspired engagement ring can be designed around practical everyday wear from the beginning. This is important because an original antique ring and a newly commissioned engagement ring may have very different requirements.

Setting height, exposed gemstone edges, band width and the possibility of wearing a wedding band alongside the ring can all be considered during the design stage.

Taking Inspiration from Original Art Deco Jewellery

Antique jewellery is an excellent source of design ideas, and customers often send photographs of rings containing particular elements they like. One image might have the right shoulders, another the preferred gemstone arrangement and another the overall proportions.

The aim does not have to be an exact copy. In many cases the more interesting result comes from identifying what gives an original ring its character and then developing a new design around those features.

This also means we can adapt the proportions to the actual centre stone, change the metal, simplify an overly elaborate surround or combine influences from several antique pieces into one coherent ring.

Why CAD Is Particularly Useful for Art Deco Designs

Geometric jewellery leaves very little room for accidental proportions. A line that is slightly too heavy, a halo that extends too far or side stones that are too large can change the entire appearance of the ring.

The CAD stage provides a much clearer view of scale and construction before production starts. It allows the relationship between the centre stone, surrounding diamonds, shank and setting to be assessed from multiple angles.

How Much Does a Custom Art Deco Style Ring Cost?

There is no meaningful single price for a bespoke Art Deco ring because the gemstone usually represents a significant part of the cost and the complexity of the setting can vary enormously.

A relatively simple trilogy ring with a coloured gemstone and two side diamonds requires a very different amount of material and work from a platinum geometric cluster containing numerous individually set diamonds.

The main factors affecting the quote are the centre gemstone, additional stones, precious metal, total weight, setting style, design complexity and craftsmanship required.

If you have a particular budget in mind, include it in your enquiry. It is often possible to adjust stone size, metal, diamond coverage or the complexity of the design while keeping the overall Art Deco character.

Starting With a Gemstone You Already Own

If you already own a gemstone, the ring can potentially be designed around its exact dimensions rather than sourcing a new centre stone. Measurements are particularly important here because custom settings need to accommodate the physical stone rather than a theoretical carat weight.

Older gemstones and stones removed from existing jewellery also need to be considered individually. Their condition, shape and suitability for the proposed setting should be assessed before assuming they can simply be transferred into a new ring.

Creating Something Antique Inspired Without Buying an Antique Ring

Genuine Art Deco rings have their own appeal, but antique jewellery also comes with limitations. Finding the preferred gemstone, finger size, metal, condition and exact design in one original ring can take time.

A newly made Art Deco style ring takes a different approach. Instead of searching for a surviving piece that happens to fit the brief, the brief becomes the starting point.

That might mean an aquamarine in the exact shape you prefer, a stronger sapphire centre, a lower profile setting, a particular finger size or a combination of yellow and white gold that would be difficult to find in an original piece.
