How Does an Online Jewellery Appraisal Work?
The process starts with photographs. Clear images allow us to study the overall design, construction, gemstones, hallmarks and condition of the item. Additional information such as weight, measurements and known history can make the assessment considerably more useful.
The jewellery is then researched individually rather than passed through an automated valuation calculator. Comparable jewellery, current asking prices, auction results, dealer prices and other relevant market information may all contribute to the final opinion.
Your findings are then presented in a written PDF appraisal and sent to the email address supplied with your order.
What Determines the Value of Jewellery?
Jewellery valuation is rarely based on one factor. Precious metal content provides part of the picture, but many pieces are worth considerably more than their scrap gold or platinum value.
Age, rarity, gemstones, workmanship, maker, condition, originality, provenance and current demand can all influence the value of an item.
A relatively lightweight antique ring with desirable old-cut diamonds, for example, may be worth significantly more than a heavier but ordinary gold ring. Equally, a signed or unusually well-made piece can attract collector interest far beyond the value of its raw materials.
Antique and Vintage Jewellery Appraisals
Antique jewellery often requires a different approach from modern jewellery. Construction techniques, hallmark styles, gemstone cuts and evidence of historic alteration can provide valuable clues when determining the likely age and origin of a piece.
Victorian jewellery alone covers more than six decades of changing fashion, while Edwardian and Art Deco jewellery can exhibit entirely different construction methods and design principles.
When assessing older jewellery, we therefore look beyond simply identifying the metal and gemstones. Period characteristics, originality and collector demand can all have a significant impact on market value.
Understanding Jewellery Hallmarks
Hallmarks are particularly useful when assessing British jewellery. Clear marks can sometimes reveal precious metal fineness, assay office, maker or sponsor and the approximate or exact year in which an item was hallmarked.
However, not all jewellery is hallmarked and markings vary considerably between countries and periods. Rings may also have been resized, causing marks to become partially lost.
For this reason, a hallmark is treated as one part of the evidence rather than the sole basis for an appraisal.
Gemstones and Online Appraisals
Diamonds, sapphires, rubies, emeralds, opals and many other gemstones can have a considerable effect on jewellery value. Size is only one consideration. Colour, clarity, cut, treatments, natural or synthetic origin and, for certain gemstones, geographical origin may all influence market value.
Certain gemstone characteristics cannot be established reliably from photographs. If your jewellery contains a particularly fine, rare, large or potentially valuable gemstone, laboratory testing may be necessary before an accurate gemstone value can be established. We would rather recommend appropriate testing than make an unsupported assumption from photographs.
Diamond Jewellery Appraisal Online
Older diamond jewellery can contain a range of diamond cuts that differ considerably from modern round brilliant stones. Old mine cuts, old European cuts, rose cuts and transitional cuts are commonly encountered in antique jewellery.
Their proportions are often less standardised than modern diamonds, and their character and period relevance can contribute to the desirability of the overall piece.
A remote appraisal can provide an estimate based on visible characteristics and supplied measurements, but an exact diamond colour or clarity grade normally requires physical examination under controlled conditions.
Does Condition Affect Jewellery Value?
Yes. Condition can substantially influence value, particularly with antique and collectible jewellery. Worn claws, damaged gemstones, missing stones, thin shanks, poor repairs or substantial alterations can reduce value.
Some evidence of wear is entirely normal on jewellery that may have been worn for more than a century. A good appraisal considers the nature of that wear rather than automatically treating every sign of age as a defect.
How to Photograph Jewellery for an Online Appraisal
Photograph the complete piece in clear, neutral lighting. Include the front, reverse and side views wherever possible.
Take close-up photographs of every hallmark, maker's mark, inscription or serial number. For rings, show the inside of the shank and underside of the setting. For necklaces and bracelets, photograph the clasp and any marks around it.
Avoid heavy filters or editing because these can change gemstone colour and make assessment more difficult.

Online Jewellery Appraisal vs Physical Appraisal
Online appraisal is particularly useful when you want to understand the likely period, materials and market value of jewellery conveniently and without sending it away.
There are, however, characteristics that cannot be confirmed remotely. We cannot physically test precious metals, examine gemstone inclusions under magnification or perform gemmological laboratory testing through a photograph.
When those characteristics could significantly affect value, we may recommend an in-person examination or laboratory report.
How Accurate Is an Online Jewellery Appraisal?
The reliability of an online appraisal depends heavily on the evidence available. Clear photographs, accurate measurements, weight and readable hallmarks can allow a surprisingly detailed assessment of many pieces of jewellery.
Where important information cannot be established remotely, the appraisal should acknowledge that limitation rather than present an uncertain conclusion as fact.
