What Makes Tanzanite Different?

Tanzanite is the blue-to-violet variety of the mineral zoisite and is strongly associated with the Merelani mining area of northern Tanzania, which supplies the commercial tanzanite market.

Its appeal lies largely in its color. Fine stones can show an intense blue with violet flashes, while others lean more noticeably toward violet.

Tanzanite is also pleochroic, meaning different colors can be visible from different crystal directions. The way a stone has been oriented and cut therefore affects its face-up appearance.

Choosing the Right Tanzanite

Strong color is generally desirable, but darker does not automatically mean better. A stone should retain attractive blue-violet color rather than becoming excessively dark when viewed in ordinary indoor light.

Transparency, cut and face-up dimensions also matter. Larger tanzanites can display impressive saturation, while a well-cut smaller stone may appear brighter and more lively than a deeper stone carrying unnecessary weight below the setting.
