Create Jewelry Around Moonstone's Soft, Floating Glow
Moonstone has a character very different from a highly faceted gemstone. Its appeal comes from adularescence: a soft light that appears to move across or beneath the surface as the stone changes position. Custom design allows that optical effect to remain the focus of the piece.
Choosing a Moonstone for Custom Jewelry
A good moonstone should be considered for the quality of its glow, body color, transparency, shape and overall condition.
Some stones show a soft white sheen, while finer examples can display a more pronounced blue adularescence. The effect should appear attractive as the stone moves rather than looking flat or poorly positioned.
Because moonstone is most commonly cut as a cabochon, dome height and exact dimensions are especially important when designing the setting around it.
Moonstone does not need intense color to create presence. A well-cut cabochon with strong adularescence can carry an entire design with only restrained metalwork or diamond accents around it.
What Is Adularescence?
Adularescence is the floating optical effect for which fine moonstone is best known.
Light interacts with the gemstone's internal feldspar structure, producing a sheen that appears to move across the stone as the viewing angle changes.
This is one reason moonstone is often better judged in motion. Photographs can capture the body color and shape, but video may reveal the strength and movement of the glow more clearly.
Moonstone and Rainbow Moonstone
Traditional moonstone belongs to the feldspar group and is prized for its characteristic adularescence.
Material commonly sold as “rainbow moonstone” is usually white labradorite, another feldspar, displaying blue or multicolored labradorescence. The trade name is widely used in jewelry, but the material is not gemologically identical to traditional moonstone.
Both can make beautiful custom jewelry. The important point is accurate description and choosing the optical effect you prefer rather than relying only on the trade name.

Choosing the Precious Metal
Yellow Gold

Moonstone Durability and Everyday Wear
Moonstone generally falls around 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, but hardness describes resistance to scratching rather than overall toughness.
The gemstone also has cleavage, so a sharp impact can potentially cause damage even where the surface has not become heavily scratched.
For frequently worn rings, a lower profile and protective setting can be sensible. Earrings and pendants are less exposed and allow greater freedom in the design.
Moonstone Care and Cleaning
Moonstone should be cleaned gently and protected from hard knocks.
Harsh chemicals, steam and ultrasonic cleaning are best avoided, particularly when the condition of the stone or setting is uncertain.
It should also be stored separately from harder gemstones such as diamond or sapphire so they do not scratch the moonstone's surface.
Using Your Own Moonstone or Heirloom Stones
A moonstone you already own can potentially become the starting point for an entirely new piece of custom jewelry.
An older ring stone might be reset into a more protective mounting, while existing diamonds can potentially be incorporated around it in a new cluster or pendant design.
Before resetting, the gemstone should be considered for surface wear, chips, fractures and its exact cabochon dimensions.
How Much Does Custom Moonstone Jewelry Cost?
The final cost depends on the quality and size of the moonstone, any diamonds or additional gemstones, the precious metal and the complexity of the design.
Strong adularescence, attractive transparency and larger clean cabochons can increase the desirability of a stone.
A simple bezel pendant may therefore sit at a very different price point from an elaborate diamond-set ring or pair of articulated drop earrings.
Why CAD Matters in Custom Moonstone Jewelry
Moonstones frequently have individual dome heights and cabochon profiles, making exact measurements important.
CAD allows the proportions, dimensions, stone placement and construction to be reviewed before production begins.
For rings this can include bezel height and edge protection. For earrings and pendants it can help refine articulation, balance and the spacing between multiple stones.
The detailed 3D CAD carries a $25 non-refundable design fee. If the commission proceeds, the $25 is deducted from the final bill.
Are there any upfront costs?
There is no charge for the initial concept stage. We work with you to develop the idea and create visual mock-ups until we arrive at a design you are happy with.
Once the concept is agreed, we provide a quote to make the piece. If you would like to proceed, we request a $25 non-refundable CAD design fee. This covers the time required for our jewelry CAD designer to create the detailed 3D model and is deducted from your final balance if the piece goes ahead.
Am I obligated to go ahead once I submit the enquiry form?
No. Submitting the enquiry form does not commit you to purchasing anything. You are free to stop at any point during the initial concept and quotation stages.
Once the CAD fee has been paid, that fee is non-refundable because the CAD work is created specifically for you. Once the 40% production deposit has been paid and manufacturing has begun, that deposit is also non-refundable if you decide not to continue with the order.
How long does the whole process take?
The initial concept and quotation stage can take anything from the same day to several days, depending on how much refining is needed to get the design exactly right.
Once the concept is approved, the 3D CAD model usually takes around 2–4 days. After the CAD is approved and the 40% deposit is paid, production normally takes around 7–21 days, although most pieces are completed within approximately two weeks.
As soon as the piece is finished, we send you photographs and/or video for approval. The remaining balance is then due before dispatch.
International delivery from Thailand using DHL or FedEx is typically around 3–7 working days, depending on the destination and customs clearance.
Can you source almost any gemstone?
In most cases, yes. Thailand is one of the world's major gemstone and jewelry centers, giving us direct access to an exceptionally wide selection of colored stones.
We source gemstones in person through trusted long-standing contacts and established traders, including within Bangkok's jewelry district and Jewellery Trade Center.
We personally inspect and select the stones used in our custom pieces rather than simply ordering unseen stock, allowing us to choose for color, cut, clarity and overall appearance.
Do you offer gemstone certification?
Yes. If certification is required, the gemstone should normally be submitted to the laboratory before the jewelry enters production, while the stone is still loose.
We can arrange reports through reputable local gem laboratories in Bangkok and, where appropriate, through internationally recognized laboratories such as GIA.
Standard local laboratory certification can often be included without additional charge. GIA certification is usually most worthwhile for higher-value, important or exceptional stones, and any GIA fees would be added to the quotation.
Laboratory turnaround can add anywhere from a few days to around two weeks depending on the laboratory and service used.
Where is my custom jewelry made?
Our custom jewelry is produced in Thailand. We source the gemstones here and work with our specialist Bangkok jewelry workshop to manufacture each piece.
Thailand has a long-established reputation for gemstone cutting and fine jewelry production, allowing us to combine skilled craftsmanship with direct access to gemstones and precious-metal manufacturing.
