Choosing an Opal for Custom Jewelry

Opal should be judged by more than size alone.

Body tone, brightness, color range, pattern and how the stone changes as it moves can all contribute to its appeal.

Video can be particularly useful when choosing an opal because a still image may only capture one moment of its play-of-color.

Black, White and Crystal Opal

Different opal types create very different jewelry.

Black opal can show intense play-of-color against a darker background and often requires surprisingly little surrounding decoration.

White or light opal creates a softer effect, while crystal opal can show a transparent to semi-transparent body with color visible through the stone.

The setting and precious metal can be chosen to reinforce the particular character of each type.

Australian and Ethiopian Opal

Australia is one of the best-known sources of precious opal, including material associated with Lightning Ridge and Coober Pedy.

Ethiopia is also an important source, and some Ethiopian opal is hydrophane, meaning it can absorb liquids.

This matters because hydrophane opal may temporarily change appearance after absorbing water, oils or other substances.

Origin should not be inferred from appearance alone where a specific geographic claim forms part of the sale.

Solid Opal, Doublet and Triplet

The construction of the gemstone should be understood before the jewelry is designed.

Solid opal consists of one piece of opal material. A doublet typically combines a thinner opal layer with a backing, while a triplet normally adds a transparent top layer as well.

Doublets and triplets can be attractive, but they are assembled stones and should be represented accordingly.

Hydrophane opal can absorb liquids, while doublets and triplets contain bonded layers and should not be soaked.

Harsh chemicals and aggressive cleaning methods should be avoided, and ultrasonic or steam cleaning should not be assumed safe for opal jewelry.

The correct care advice should therefore be based on the actual stone rather than treating every opal identically.

Using Your Own Opal or Heirloom Stones

An opal you already own can potentially become the starting point for a completely new custom piece.

A stone removed from an older ring might become a pendant, while existing diamonds can potentially be rearranged around it in a new cluster or halo.

Exact length, width, dome height and condition should be considered before the new setting is finalized.

How Much Does Custom Opal Jewelry Cost?

The cost depends on the opal, any supporting diamonds or gemstones, the precious metal and complexity of the design.

Opal value itself can vary significantly according to type, brightness, body tone, pattern, size and overall appearance.

A simple white opal pendant therefore has very different requirements from a fine black opal surrounded by diamonds in a substantial platinum setting.

Why CAD Matters in Custom Opal Jewelry

Opals often have individual cabochon profiles, unusual dome heights and non-standard outlines.

CAD allows the proportions, dimensions, stone placement and construction to be developed around the actual gemstone before production begins.

For rings this can help refine bezel or claw placement and setting height. For pendants and earrings it can help confirm articulation, total length and the relationship between opal and diamond elements.

The detailed 3D CAD carries a $25 non-refundable design fee. If the commission proceeds, the $25 is deducted from the final bill.
