Choosing the Right Diamond

Diamond selection should begin with the finished jewelry rather than treating grading figures as the only objective.

Shape, visible dimensions, cut, color, clarity and carat weight all matter, but their importance changes according to the design.

A diamond intended for a solitaire ring may have different priorities from one being used in an antique-inspired cluster or a pair of earrings where two stones need to match visually.

Diamond Shapes for Custom Jewelry

Round brilliant diamonds offer strong brightness and versatility, but bespoke jewelry allows much more freedom.

Oval, cushion, pear, emerald-cut, marquise and Asscher-style diamonds can completely change the character of a piece.

Baguettes and tapered baguettes are particularly useful as supporting stones, while mixed-cut arrangements can introduce more structure into Art Deco and other period-inspired designs.

Natural Diamonds and Lab-Grown Diamonds

Because genuine old diamonds are rarely perfectly calibrated, the setting should be designed around the actual stones rather than expecting them to fit a standard modern mounting.

Custom Diamond Rings

Rings offer perhaps the widest range of possibilities for a bespoke diamond design.

A diamond can sit alone in a restrained solitaire, form part of a three-stone arrangement, become the center of a substantial cluster or be integrated into a more intricate antique-inspired setting.

Custom Diamond Cluster Jewelry

Clusters use several diamonds to create a larger visual composition. A larger center may be surrounded by smaller stones, or several diamonds can be arranged together without one dominant center.

This approach works particularly well with collections of old-cut or inherited diamonds because the setting can be developed around stones that are not perfectly identical.

Custom Diamond Earrings

Bespoke diamond earrings can be designed around a matched pair of stones or use several diamonds in articulated drops and more decorative arrangements.

With earrings, visual matching between the two pieces is particularly important. Exact laboratory grades do not necessarily need to be identical, but the diamonds should appear balanced when worn together.

Using Diamonds You Already Own

Existing diamonds may potentially be incorporated into a new commission.

A solitaire diamond could become the center of a cluster, a matched pair might become earrings, or several inherited stones could be brought together into a pendant or completely new ring.

Their measurements, condition and compatibility with the proposed design should be assessed before the setting is finalized.

Remodeling Heirloom Diamond Jewelry

Older jewelry can contain excellent diamonds even when the setting itself no longer suits the current wearer.

Remodeling allows the stones to remain while the precious metal, layout and overall style are changed.

This is especially effective with family diamonds where the sentimental value belongs to the stones rather than the original setting.

Several pieces may also potentially be combined into one new commission.

How Much Does Custom Diamond Jewelry Cost?

The cost depends on the diamonds, precious metal and complexity of the design.

One understated pendant with a single diamond has very different requirements from a platinum cluster ring or articulated pair of multi-stone earrings.

Diamond shape also matters. Certain matched pairs and unusual shaped stones can require more sourcing than standard round diamonds.

Providing a realistic budget at the beginning allows the stones and design to be developed together rather than creating a concept that is unnecessarily expensive.

Diamond Certification and Laboratory Reports

Independent grading reports can be useful for significant diamonds, particularly where a stone's specifications materially affect its value.

A report may provide information such as carat weight, color, clarity and cut-related characteristics depending on the diamond and laboratory service.

Grading information is useful, but it should not completely replace visual assessment. Two diamonds with apparently similar paper specifications can still look different in person.

Why CAD Matters in Custom Diamond Jewelry

CAD allows the dimensions, stone placement and construction of a bespoke piece to be reviewed before manufacturing begins.

It is especially valuable for complex multi-stone jewelry, where small changes in diamond size can substantially change the overall proportions.

For earrings, it can help confirm symmetry and length. For pendants, it allows the relationship between articulation and stone placement to be examined. For rings, setting height, shank width and overall footprint can all be refined in advance.

The detailed 3D CAD carries a $25 non-refundable design fee. If the commission proceeds, the $25 is deducted from the final bill.

Approval and Production

You review and approve the final CAD before production begins. Once approved, a 40% deposit of the quoted price confirms the commission.

Your jewelry is then created by our workshop. Once complete, we show you the finished piece before the remaining 60% is paid and the jewelry is securely dispatched.
