Choosing a Sapphire for Custom Jewelry

Color is usually the first consideration, but cut, visible dimensions, transparency and how the stone performs in different lighting are equally important.

Two sapphires with the same carat weight may look very different once set. One may carry more depth below the setting, while another spreads wider across the piece.

Blue Sapphire Jewelry

Blue remains the best-known sapphire color, but there is considerable variation within it.

Some stones are lighter and brighter, while others show deeper and more saturated blue. A very dark sapphire is not automatically more desirable if much of its color disappears in ordinary lighting.

A beautiful heated sapphire can make an excellent piece of custom jewelry. Fine unheated stones may command premiums where the treatment status and quality are appropriately documented.

Treatment status should not be confused with beauty. An unheated stone is not automatically more attractive than a heated one.

Sapphire Origin and Laboratory Reports

Geographic origin can be important for some higher-value sapphires, but origin should not be inferred simply from color or appearance.

Stones from different locations can overlap substantially in appearance. Where a particular origin materially affects the value, suitable laboratory evidence should support the claim.

A laboratory report may also provide information about natural identity and detected treatment, depending on the laboratory and service used.

Using Your Own Sapphire or Heirloom Stones

A sapphire you already own can potentially become the starting point for an entirely new piece.

How Much Does Custom Sapphire Jewelry Cost?

The price depends on the sapphire, any additional diamonds or gemstones, precious metal and complexity of the design.

A simple sapphire pendant has very different requirements from a platinum diamond cluster ring or an articulated pair of sapphire and diamond earrings.

Sapphire value can also vary considerably according to color, size, cut, treatment status and documentation.

Giving us a realistic target budget allows the stone and design to be developed together from the beginning.

Why CAD Matters in Custom Sapphire Jewelry

Custom jewelry needs to be designed around the actual dimensions of the stones.

CAD allows the proportions, dimensions, gemstone placement and construction to be reviewed before production begins.

For rings this can include setting height and shank width. For pendants and earrings it allows us to review length, articulation and the relationship between multiple stones.

The detailed 3D CAD carries a $25 non-refundable design fee. If the commission proceeds, the $25 is deducted from the final bill.
